Define achievement Gap:
(see below)

Digital Divide:

Worst achievement Gap Areas:
1.  D.C.
2.  Louisiana
3.  Minnesota

Discussion:
Student refugees lack of experience with technology.  Have cell phone maybe....not computers at home?  Big issue is parents not seeing technology as part of education.  How do we use the students abusing techn. as a teachable moment.

Is it intuitive?  For who??  Needs to be played with.
More education pick it up easier, others it's slower.
Vocab necessary to talk about the technology
Question:  People try to avoid using it with kids (refugees?) These are the skill sets they have to use this stuff.....What skill sets to certain groups have?  Do they work better in groups?
Muslim women especially empowered with social media.  Supports curiosity?
Digital = temporary
pen/paper = permanent

Would it be better to have 3-4 students all work on one computer?  Structure roles and input, how to collaborate when not everyone has the wheel.

Question is critical (Mitra). More important to have purpose than access???

Perceived ownership....how do we create that with content. How do we engage with students in the way they learn(search boxes).
Project based learning (jerking!!)  Be innovative with content.  Good for kids who couldn't do regular school.  Not for every kid.
Recent immigrants:  call to prayer online, ex.  Access helps them connect with their home culture.

How to get administration onboard?  Technology not just an engagment tool, but part of the whole process?

Carl:   State taking info on 30 schools about how they were using technology.  Data from 8 districts, 6 in metro and 2 outside; % of students on free and reduced lunch.  Direct correlation between using HOT skills with technology and poverty.  How do we norm our tests?  The poorer the school, the more likey to not be using HOT skills.

Priorities: Closing that digital divide
How can we use technology to have the ahhhha moment?

Many pardigm shifts to think about as we consider how we can close this achievement gap.

Another gap: the people who make youtube? ( Beyond using the computer, then making your own video.)
How to use, how to use originally, and how to make their own....something.
We have a problem; let's solve it!  This is the kind of thinking that produces 'successful' thinking.

Need to know when to use the technology?
Need to give them access to different options for showing their learning?

TED talk:  don't sell you the product, but the why comes first.
Maybe start lesson with the WHY to get their interest.  Then have students figure out how to get there.....
 Film:  Objectify
 Form no longer meets function.
