the idea of making use of content that is being created in educational settings, instead of throwing stuff out, e.g. translations

LTU Senior executive
PVC - Future Learning, Claire Macken spoke about the LTU projects that seem to align to the open education question. Future Learning project. Radcial Learning project. . LTU iTunesU

Ruth's notes:    Universities protective of their contnent. How do we deal with IP at an institutional level in open ed space?
current open ed practices it La Trobe include significant iTunes U presence. Is that open?

==Open Tab==
Ruth Jelley spoke about the OpenTab project - the production of educational resources for mobile computers (phones, tablets, netbooks). What is an educational resource? The production needs to align to curriculum design process. What is the relationship with large publishers.. how do we consider their marketing techniques? Might the university (and its wider community) create textbooks? Might more accessible and affordable textbooks affect student retention?

==Wikipedia==
Anthony thony speaks about editing Wikipedia. Describing a typical morning that focuses on  medical articles. Checking recent changes - deleting poor contributions. Checking citations. Takes 20 minutes to 20 hours per day. 'Recent changes trawling'. The problem with WIkipedia is not what is there, but what is not there. Big medical ideas like 'Cancer' are well covered. But the next levels down are poorly covered. The goal is comprehensive coverage, in a single convenient place. The interface is being developed, to make editing easier. Most medical content on Wikipedia is being added by enthusiasts. Experts needed? Experts aren't rewarded for contributions to WIkipedia. Docjames is working with The Journal of Internet Medical Research, to do peer review of Wikipedia articles. This may result in a process whereby academics can achieve peer review and publication in the journal.

Ruth: how do we get buy-in from experts? Peer-reviewing of Wikipedia articles.

Ruth's notes: wikipedia - what is NOT there?
some a pages/topics need a lot of work. How do we get that work to happen in a volunteer community? interface = barrier. Screen of code = instils fear into many new users.

==University of the Third Age==
Jack from the University of the Third Age questions the use of the terms relating to "Open education". He chanllenges the institution's hold and authority on the practice of education, and can't readily adapt to openness. Many assessment practices can't accept open learning (free form). So in theory and principle, but in practice? Open learning, and open education can threaten "empires".. formed power structures..  example.. TAFE used to have a process that excludes learning gained at other organisations. Less so today.

U3A, for people 50 yrs and over. $40 per year. Open learning. There are compinations of open syllibus, and strict syllibus, and combination of the two. Some online and blended activities are starting to be used. Jack teaches a "Does Democracy Work" course online. Using popular channels like Facebook raises concerns for senior learners. Only 70% have email address. From those, many don't own a computer and work at the local library. Computer literacy is a major concern.

==Marco Polo Project==
A digital community. In legal terms its a Not for Profit focusing on building Chinese and China literacy. Language skills, and bringing Chinese writing and contemporary culture to Western audiences. marcopoloproject.org Since March 2012. Suggestion is for Chinese language students to join in the translation of Chinese web content.

==Closing remarks==
#Copyright seems to be a large hurdle within the University sector
#What is open? WHat does open education mean?
#Institution owns the product of employees work
#Large institutions = necessary risk aversion. An institution needs to know it's parameters
