WikiWednesday: The Power of Naming in Wiki & Online Community

Usually at Portland WikiWednesdays, there's some unstructured (or wiki-like) discussion and activity around whatever wiki we happen to cluster around. Occasionally though, we like to have stimulating talks and discussion from folks knowledgeable about wiki and community building.

This month's event is one of those times. On Wednesday, May 5 we will welcome John Abbe, a designer of the structured wiki called Wagn, talk about the importance of naming in wikis.

By naming, we don't necessarily mean the name for your website. At the most basic level, we mean the web of names that make up all the individual pages in an individual wiki, and how choosing the correct naming system can enhance your community like nothing else. This is a little like the Wonder Twins: naming power can change your wiki from a bucket of water to a dinosaur with a laser. NamingPowerActivate!

He'll be covering the traditions of community ontology from all the way back in Ward's original wiki, and will also touch on pattern languages and how Wagn extends the power of well-groomed wiki naming structures.
