Questions and Observations

Notes from the Discussions
  • Investment vs dontation and the underlying values of our client organizations
  • Someone put a definition of DISCERNMENT

  • 1. Do you know a platform that uses crowd-sourcing and crowd- funding at the same time ?  Ooh, good question. What have you found via searching? Look at the blog of Beth Kanter who has really specialised in this! http://www.bethkanter.org/crowdfunding/
  • 2. Most products on crowd- funding are buisness to customer products. Can crowfunding also work business to business ? Oh, again, a great question and I am not sure of the answer. The most relevant ones I know of are crowdsourcing of work. So I put out there that I need something and people can respond. It is sort of like bidding for work. Mechanical Turk on Amazon is another huge example.
  • also a lot of specialised B2B work websited exits e.g. for translation work

  • 1.  Crowdfunding sites like kickstarter are a lot more popular in America than in Europe..do you have an advice, for how to find the right audience ?  Have you found any research that indicates which sites are popular in which regions? Have you asked any people who are experts in crowdfunding their advice? When I get a question I can't answer, I start with a search engine and then tap my networks!
  •  2. If you want to get startet with your project on kickstarter, how can you build up your community for support ?  There are some great articles and videos out there from experienced kickstarters. I think the key on kickstarter is that it is very PRODUCT focused, vs fundraising for an NGO, so I'd first ask if kickstarter is the best site to use. That said, if you do have things you can give as incentives, Kickstarter relies on incentives, finding ways to get people to encourage their own network and regular, USEFUL email updates. There is a guy here in Seattle who had a 30K goal and raised 300K (for a children's programming game)

  • We have many ideas, should we continue developing them or choose one and focus on that?
  • A: Depends on your client and their needs. In the end maximise it to maybe
  • 2. Just make sure that for the video it doesn't become overwhelming.

  • What kind of incentives could be provided within Solidaridad?
  • How to motivate people to use the platform? A: How is it relevant to their day2day life? Are there pain points in that daily life that can be relieved by using the platform. Do small experiments, e.g. by 'forcing' them to use fileshare instead of sending files via e-mail. What motivates you in gaming? Maybe prizes, things you accumulate, or social aspects. Number of page hits can be very motivating.

1. What is the main difference between crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for human resources? This comes from Maarten (client') question.
A: Google crowdfunding for labour Crowdsourcing would be crowdfunding for labor. Lingos.org is a site in which you can find free labor. (Actually, LINGOS.org is an NGO that uses crowdsourcing for labor using a LinkedIn group. It is very targetted to people who are professional developers of elearning. So the pool of participants is not huge, but very relevant. There are also sites that are big and open with lots of different skill markets. Amazon's Mechanical Turk is one of the largest)  It is targeted to all sorts of people. Make sure to remember the purpose and who to target.
Crowdfunding is for people with talents.
