April 5, 2012: Future of Education interview with Howard and Steve Hargadon on Netsmart. Steve is a great interviewer, and about 80 members of his active Classroom 2.0 community joined via text chat. The Blackboard Collaborate recording (use the player controls)  includes audio, video, slides, and text chat. You will be asked to  allow the download and launch of a Java applet, then use the player  controls to play the recording.

  • Social Media Literacies (as defined by Howard)- the skill of encoding and decoding with a social or sharing element
  • Attention (as defined by Howard)- Something that challenges us due to all of the communication media around us, attention to intention is how the mind changes the brain

  • Power Law of Participation - Social software brings groups together to discover and create value.  The problem is, users only have so much time for social software.  The vast majority of users with not have a high level of engagement with a given group, and most tend to be free riders upon community value.  But patterns have emerged where low threshold participation amounts to collective intelligence and high engagement provides a different form of collaborative intelligence (from Ross Mayfield's blog here: http://ross.typepad.com/blog/2006/04/power_law_of_pa.html)
  • Social capital - the capacity of people to get things done through networks of trust, outside of formal institutions Incomplete definition of social capital, perhaps this is the definition of network capital.  Wikipedia defines social capital as "the expected collective or economic benefits derived from the  preferential treatment and cooperation between individuals and groups."
  • Curation - if you collect good stuff  ... aww, I lost the train - something about you will collect a valuable group of people who are attracted to the same thing - AHA there it is on slide 51, "Send signls that attract like-minded potential collaborators" (H Reingold)
  • Curation: Leverage collective intelligence. Filter for each other. 
  • Architectures of participation - use self interest to construct public goods
  • Howard coined the term "virtual communities"
  • Enclosure - converting public goods to private use, or private ownership
